The local people
are almost dependent on water of Ultar glacier for both
drinking and irrigation water. Small amount of water is also lifted
from the upper Altit mountains.
It is said
that the Ultar glacier was extended down to Hunza river when
human settlement first started in Altit. The
first channel excavated to irrigate the earlier settlement is said
to be from the Phi Har. Later on after the invasion of
Kisar on Altit a new channel was excavated from Harchi
and is still known as Kisar Dalla. But later on due to
glacier shift the channel remained useless. Later on the people
constructed
Irkish channel which connected the Phi Har stream and
helped channel water from the Ultar glacier. With upward
movement of Ultar glacier the Harchi area were
populated. With increase in population people moved from the old
settlement areas to upper areas and thus excavated different
irrigation channels from the main Ultar stream. It is said
that during the rule of Mir Malik the people excavated a channel from Discha to the Altit
Rut and Khabasi which is still known as
Malik-e-Dala. The channel also irrigated lands in upper areas. During
the same time the Kisar Dilla was also reconstructed. Simultaneously, the Phurzoka channel was constructed and
another channel was extended during the time of Munshi Mughal.
The channel is now known as Imam Yaari as the the
people excavated the channel without any equipmnet but cutting a
very difficult terrain. Later on Rahim Yari was constructed
with the finacial support of Local Body and Rural Development
(LB&Rd).
