On August 8, 2007, Muhammad Mian Soomro, inaugurated state of
art “Gems Cutting & Polishing Center”, Karimabad Hunza in
the Northern Areas of Pakistan. This center is being
established by KADO in collaboration with Rupani Foundation
and Aga Khan Rural Support programme. The aim of this center
is to develop gems sector in the Northern Areas through
developing capacities and expertise in gems cutting and
polishing, mining, jewelry design and marketing of the
precious and semi precious stones because it is a fact that
Northern Area is blessed with unfathomable treasure of the
gems, precious and semi precious stones and it is expected
that through this center the concealed massive economic
potential is explored for the greater benefit of the
community.

Muhammad Mian Soomro after the inauguration visited the
training center; marketing and production center at
Karimabad and felt complete satisfaction over the progress
and the quality of work produced by the trainees and the
producers. Speaking to the gathering of notables, community
and political leaders He said, ‘the work is very unique and
it should be kept on going as it promises a better future
for so many men and women. He appreciated the efforts made
by the KADO and showed his commitment to encourage investors
to invest in the area in this particular field. He also
thanked to Nasrudin Rupani, to chairman AKRSP and KADO for
showing him such a nice work.

The center was conceived and started in 2006. Nasruddin
Rupani provided financial support and AKRSP provided
technical support. KADO has produced 32 (90% female) gems
cutting and polishing experts and the struggle is
continuous. The facility is equipped with the state of art
machines of gems cutting and polishing. This center is
proving income and employment opportunities to many
underserved. In coming year this center has much potential
to produce experts and specialist people in the sector. When
the capacities are developed the sector will be developed
through value chain management. |
