Karakoram Area Development organization –
KADO for the first time developed a sound, reliable and
updated information system on socio economic aspects and
indicators in Hunza in collaboration with Ismaili Council
for Hunza and Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC)
as a part of its one of the knowledge Management
Initiatives. Under this initiative, KADO is also working to
provide information to community for development through
local cable and networks. The aim of this information system
is to make available precise and reliable data for regional
planning, be it Government, Non government and civil society
and to increase the access to information so that the
quality decisions are made. All institutions and individuals
need data/ information to make a variety of decisions but
there was no proper system to provide a reliable and proper
data. It is expected that this system will help timely
availability of information to all users.

This system is named with “Cyber Hunza
Information System”. KADO under its knowledge management
initiative conducted a detailed socio-economic survey
covering an area of almost 15,000 sq km with the population
of 55,000. This survey includes almost all economic and
social indicators, including age groups, income
distribution, birth rates, death rates, other social
indicators, poverty lines, expenditure patterns, migration
etc which could be used for overall planning and to be more
specific town planning, infrastructure building, education,
health, gross and net income, people involved in sectors, in
designing of different interventions.
The tool
used to get the data is questionnaire through trained
enumerators in seven information points in lower, centre and
upper Hunza. Software is developed for this purpose with
the capacity to manage all data and analysis. Thousands of
the reports will be generated from the system depending on
the requirement of the information. Different research
topics and articles will be developed from the information
with further research and in depth studies.

The system will serve as information backbone
for civil society organizations, government and NGOs,
researchers and students, farmers and traders, visitors and
tourists, public and global community at large. This data
will help the institutions, individuals and interest group
equally in village and towns with respect to village and
town planning, infrastructure development and intervention
designs at village to division level. |
