Mountcon:
Mountain Heritage and Development Partners
is a
local initiative taken by the educated and socially conscious
youth of the Karakoram region. It is a for-profit
organization that intends to apply its knowledge, skills,
experience and profit on further research into
projects and programmes of merit and of public utility to
contribute to broader objectives of sustainable mountain
development. Specific objective are to:
i)
Document, promote and disseminate indigenous knowledge
and experiences of mountain communities;
ii)
Enhance the capacity of local civil society initiatives
involved in change management in the Karakoram region;
iii)
Provide opportunities for the local educated youth to lead
the development processes by creatively engaging them in
local development and in carrying out research-oriented field
work;
iv)
Provide a forum for the local development practitioners
and social scientists in the region to debate key mountain development
themes and create synthesis on burning issues, and
v)
Influence policy makers and policy
making institutions through lobbying, advocacy and social
activism to achieve objectives of participatory, integrated
and sustainable development.
